It is always pleasing to make new discoveries and if you are into beautiful melodies placed in an easy to get on with setting, often accompanied by relaxed rhythms, then this is for you. Amongst his influences are Vangelis, Kitaro, Gandalf and Yanni and it shows. If you are into these artists, or even Jonn Serrie and Terry Oldfield then I would strongly recommend you try this guy out. A violin gets 'A New World' underway backed by the faint sound of the wind. Later on synth pads swell and little cosmic touches are added. It then gets quite symphonic with massed strings and even timpani.
'Lonely' starts with the sound of a storm then becomes gently rhythmic. Melody is provided by soft pads, piano and later, flute with acoustic guitar.
'Closer to the Truth Part 1' then 'Part 2' are both rather tender symphonic numbers with maybe a slight Celtic touch. The latter includes some piano but even more is present on 'Part 3' where the strings take more of a back seat. Ideal music to listen to in the Scottish Highlands.
Flute again comes into play along with acoustic guitar and piano on 'Himalaya Mountains'. It's an extremely serene combination. 'Dream' is quite a jaunty rhythmic number, acoustic guitar then piano combining to form playful little melodies.
It's all extremely pleasant foot tapping stuff that flows straight into 'Closer to the Truth Part 4' which takes up the theme from the earlier parts but gives the whole thing a much more romantic feel as does 'When the Story Ends'.
The last instalment 'Part 5' however is a much different affair being rather moody, even melancholy.
'Associations' and 'Strange Beauty Crying' are both gentle chuggers with a similar feel to 'Dream'; imagine if Terry and Mike Oldfield got together to record, it might sound something like this.
'Questions' is flute dominated, initially just accompanied by a little percussion and faint piano. The piano becomes more prominent later, taking lead duties for a while then sharing the limelight with the flute as we get closer to the end. Again it's all extremely peaceful and pleasant.
'Into the Mountains' is as upbeat as it gets, with even a restrained dance type rhythm accompanied by high hat backing, balanced by lovely piano / flute interludes. It works surprisingly well!

I've heard many good debut albums before but this is the best so far. Self taught musician Rogier has created something not far short of a masterpiece with From the shadow to the sun, an album that comprises recordings made over five years. Influenced by many of the big names in the electronic music scene (Vangelis, Kitaro, J.M.Jarre, Yanni, and Tangerine Dream to name some) his compositions are particularly reminiscent of Vangelis due to the big synth symphonic style to be found on many tracks. The album structure is a little unusual in that it contains fourteen basically discrete tracks, though some are segued, of which five could possibly be classed as an album within an album.
Interspersed throughout the first ten tracks are five parts of "Closer to the truth", these are the most emotionally charged pieces on the album and have quite a cinematic quality. They're the sort of pieces that you can easily imagine being used in the soundtrack to an uplifting film, and "Closer to the truth Part 1" could even bring a tear to one's eye in the right circumstances. A girlfriend once said that I like dramatic songs -- she was right -- and that's surely why this album appeals to me so much. From the shadow to the sun oozes stirring, contemplative, and inspiring emotions in a way that is rare on an electronic music album - it's not afraid to tug at the heartstrings and the soul. Rogier has a gift for melodies that I've noticed in John Kerr's music, especially of the emotional yet expansive kind. Whether it's the majestic synth tracks, the more exciting rhythmic pieces, the flutey or piano melodies, this album delivers superb music in spades.
This is an album I'd love to hear while sat looking across the Himalayas which presumably inspired the track called "Himalaya mountains", what a combination of awe inspiring scenery and music that would be.
What else can I say?! From the shadow to the sun is certain to be on my list of favourites, I encourage anyone who likes stirring emotional music to get a copy as you won't regret it.
This is the sort of album I'd recommend to people who don't normally listen to synth music to show them what they're missing!

"From The Shadow to the Sun" is the first official record by Dutch professional composer, arranger, producer and musician Rogier.
The outcome on this cd indeed sounds upper-class and very rich, and the first name that jumped in my mind was Vangelis. Next to lots of lyrical flavours, there’s also a slight easy-going/romantic feel constantly lurking around the corner as Rogier expertly displays his varied symphonic-oriented compositions.
Personally, I’m not too fond of the quite often used melodic flute sound as solo voice, but they are nicely counterparted by vibrant piano passages and big, spacious and majestic string and choir pads. Only on "Into The Mountains", the longest track on the album, the music turns up the up-beat, dance alley, so if he would play a live-concert, this would be a proper encore.
In the end, the well-executed but also mainstream outcome of "From The Shadow to the Sun" proves Rogier doesn’t take any risks (and even the bonus track doesn’t change that).
Rogier's mellow and warm flowing music sticks to the path of discrete and rather contemplative instrumental music, although there’s a string of drama and emotion embedded in them as well. If you by any chance come across this album (although the label that put it out is defunct for years), make sure to check it out though.

Men neme een flinke brok van Gandalf en Vangelis met hier en daar een vleugje Yanni, een snufje Kitaro en een scheutje Tangerine Dream, we roeren er eens flink in en voila, we hebben From the Shadow to the Sun, het debuut-album van Rogier. Bovengenoemde artiesten komen al heel snel bij me op, bij het beluisteren van dit album, wat niet zo gek is, aangezien Rogier in zijn bio al aangeeft zeer sterk beïnvloed en geïnspireerd te zijn door hen.
Opener A New World bijvoorbeeld, had zo op een Vangelis-album kunnen staan, wat overigens ook geldt voor de 5 delen van Closer to the Truth. Ook de invloeden van Gandalf zijn overduidelijk te horen.
Is dit erg? Ach, de originaliteitsprijs zal dit album zeker niet winnen, maar nee, het is niet erg, aangezien het album werkelijk bloedmooi is. Prachtige muzikale parels schitteren er aan deze horizon van klanken die zijn weerga niet kent, waar ook nog eens heel veel gevoel en gedrevenheid uit voortkomt. Er staat zelfs een soort van dance-track op in de vorm van Into the Mountains, die verrassend genoeg best bij de rest van de nummers past.
Rogier heeft dit alles op vakkundige wijze op dit album vastgelegd die ik aan iedereen aanbeveel die van mooie, dromerige en soundtrack-achtige muziek houdt.
Origineel? Néé!!! Mooi? Já!!! Conclusie: een 5. (De muziek is gewoon té mooi om een lager cijfer te geven)

When I First heard the Music of Dutch auto-didactic synthesizer musician Rogier (1973), I was very impressed by the positive energy and emotions being evoked by his musical creations. Influenced by synthesizer masters such as Vangelis, Gandalf, Kitaro, Tangerine Dream and Yanni, Rogier is able to create immense and well aranged Music of which the themes seem to get hooked up in your head forever. The spiritual melodies and sounds makes you want to experience the far travels and beautiful nature that his music visualises.

Not before the very moment that Rogier and I met and we first sat down to edit and master his Music, I found out that his music was already available through the internet for some years. And that he gained top 10 positions in the international and European easy listening download charts on the internet. MP3.com decided to give him the ‘Hot Artist spotlight’ status and a few months later he received the INCA music award for best new age composer. And in all those years his music had never been released on a CD.

Een vlucht in de wereld van Vangelis. Rogier werd in Nederland geboren in 1973. Hij werd op zijn 14e gepakt door het fantastische “Antarctica” van Vangelis en werd daarna steeds verder de wereld van de EM ingezogen. Sinds zijn 18e is hij actief bezig met muziek. Na enkele succesvolle publicaties op MP3.com kwam zijn debuutalbum “From the shadow to the sun” uit op het Quantum Records label. Zijn muziek is gebruikt in verschillende films. “Spiritual diversity” is Rogier’s tweede CD.
​
De opening met een fraaie bombastische elektronische Vangelis kloon zet de toon voor de CD. Romantische en warme thematische elektronica uit de stal van de elektronische Vangelis met soms een reepje Kitaro en het mag bij tijd en wijle ook lekker swingen, zoals je dat bijvoorbeeld bij Ron Boots-solo’s hoort. Maar de elektronische Vangelis van Voices en The City is hier dominant, gelardeerd met fraai bombastisch elekronisch slag en stampwerk. Dit wordt afgewisseld met brede, romantische akkoorden en rustig pianospel. De nummers liggen erg gemakkelijk in het gehoor, bijna vanzelfsprekend, maar blijven altijd boeiend. Vaak blijft Rogier heel dicht bij Vangelis, maar hij wijkt bij tijd en wijle van dat pad af. Zeker waar meer gaat swingen, vind ik dat erg geslaagd. Alles past mooi in elkaar en het geeft prettige afwisseling.

Ook de romantische nummers op piano met elektronische string begeleiding zijn heel mooi en komen soms echt dicht bij het niveau van Vangelis. Misschien net iets minder soepel, en het raakt je misschien wat minder diep in je ziel … maar hoor eens, we zitten dan al wel met Vangelis te vergelijken: dat alleen al is een groot compliment. Het geluidsbeeld is altijd heerlijk breed, open en vriendelijk.
​
Op een enkel wat dof klinkend nummer na, is de geluidskwaliteit dik in orde, maar mist net die warmte, diepte en finesse van de echte top. Op zich stoort dat niet, maar Rogier’s muziek verdient eigenlijk gewoon topkwaliteit. Rogier heeft en indrukwekkende batterij apparatuur, die je kunt bewonderen op zijn website.

Spiritual Diversity is een dikke aanrader voor de liefhebbers van de elektronische Vangelis. Het artwork is eenvoudig met titelinformatie en een korte tekst, geïnspireerd door het verlangen de drukke alledaagse wereld te ontvluchten naar de vrijheid en ruimte van je eigen gedachten wereld. Deze CD is daar een uitstekend hulpmiddel bij. 4 sterren van 5.

Dat geweldige EM niet altijd uit het buitenland hoeft te komen, bewijst de Nederlandse amateur musicus Rogier van Gaal met zijn indrukwekkende debuut album From the shadow to the sun. Op deze sfeervolle cd zijn muzikale invloeden te horen van Gandalf, Kitaro, Vangelis, Mike Oldfield en Yanni. Hij won met dit album een Inca Music award voor beste new age artist, en zijn nummers, die je in het verleden kon neerladen van internet, stonden meteen in de spiritual easy listening top 20 op de eerste plaats. Wat deze autodidact synthesizer musicus namelijk klaarspeelt is echt ongelofelijk. Rogier weet met zijn dromerige en sfeervolle muziek een bijzondere wereld te maken waar je als luisteraar in wordt meegesleept en die je een uur blijft boeien. Het is al boeiend genoeg om te kijken naar de prachtige illustratie op de hoes, gemaakt door de ontwerper Robert Muda (deze heeft ook andere mooie computer graphics gemaakt en meerdere platen hoezen). Het bijzonder knappe van deze CD, waar hij maarliefst 5 jaar aan heeft gewerkt, is ook dat hij misschien wel invloeden heeft gebruikt van bovenstaande musici, maar dat er toch sprake is van een herkenbare eigen stijl.

Het album begint met het openingsnummer A new World dat begint met een klein stukje solostrings met het ruisen van de wind en dat samenvloeit tot een krachtige kitaro-achtige melodie (die we kennen uit Silver Cloud / Queen Millenia periode in 1983-1984) met synths , pauken, andere bombastische percussie en belletjes.
​
Track 2 Lonely begint met regen en donder waarna een mooie melodie te voor schijn komt met een simpel maar leuk ritme, wat strings en piano (beetje John Dyson op het album Evolution), kort daarna komt de karakteristieke panfluit-achtige solo die Rogier hanteert en die zijn eigen stijl introduceert in het gehele album.
​
De track Closer to the truth Part 1 is de eerste van vijf hoofdstukken, die steeds terugkeren als een rode draad in het album waar pianowerkjes worden gecombineerd met sfeervolle strings. Hoofdstuk 1 begint met zo’n stukje piano gecombineerd met een strings solo overgaand in een krachtig Mike Oldfield-achtig thema (wat veel weg heeft van het nummer The Wind Chimes part 1 van het album Islands), met krachtige percussie en kleine belletjes dat eindigt met het geluid van een ruisende zee.
​
Dit stuk vloeit meteen over in de vierde track genaamd Closer to the truth part 2, dit is weer een pianostukje met wat ingetogen strings, wat electronische oohs waarna een krachtige melodie ontstaat met veel strings en percussie, Rogier bewijst hier ook mee dat hij ook een zeer vaardig pianist is die veel pianotechnieken onder de knie heeft.
​
Het nummer Himalaya Mountains begint met een tikkende percussie met een mooie fluitachtige solo, stukje harp, warme strings en een Gandalf-achtig pianostukje (dat onder meer is te horen op Invisible Power) met weer de karakteristieke fluitsolo van Rogier.
Daarna komt er een sfeervolle melodie met veel oohs erbij en krachtige blazerachtige tonen gecombineerd met veel strings.
​
Track 6 is Closer to the truth part 3 met ditmaal een pianostukje dat te vergelijken is met de composities van Patrick O’hearn en Yanni, met veel oohs, strtings, bombastische marsachtige percussie (zoals de trommels van de Vangelis klassieker To the unknown man) en de steeds terugkerende fluitsolo met veel mooie strings.
​
Het volgende nummer Dream is een nummer met voor het eerst een heel simpel ritme dat gecombineerd wordt met een stukje vocoder en een akoestische gitaarachtige solo (dat veel lijkt op het Vangelis nummer Spanish Harbour van het album Oceanic), met veel piano, strings en een fluitsolo (dit nummer lijkt veel op de Mike Oldfield Folk klassieker Voyager, vol met prachtige Ierse nummers).
​
Deze fluitsolo wordt op den duur ook heel krachtige, maar zweeft dan met wat pianoklanken over in Track 8, Closer to the truth part 4, dat begint met een Enya achtig stukje piano, met lichte electronische verfraaiingen en lichte percussie. Dit nummer is dan ook heel erg boeiend om naar te luisteren en een genot om naar te luisteren na een hectische dag op het werk of school.
​
Het nummer Associations begint met een rustig ritme, en wat sequencerachtige akkoorden, gevolgd door strings en piano (de muziek lijkt op de vrij onbekende Japanse pianiste Keiko Matsui en de iets bekendere Suzanne Clani), kort daarna komt er een akoestische gitaarsolo met een krachtige melodie op de inmiddels bekende fluitende tonen van Rogier (dit nummer lijkt ook veel op het latere symfonische werk van Kitaro, bijvoorbeeld het album Dreams en Mandala).
​
Nummer 10 genaamd Closer to the truth part 5 begint met een stukje klanklandschap met de piano en strings, het nummer wordt heel stevig met een simpele melodie maar met veel bombastische percussie.
​
Het muzikale hoogtepunt komt op het nummer Questions, waar een rustig stukje panfluitsolo met pianobegeleiding een mooie melodie introduceert, met stukjes percussie en bas akkoorden, op een mooie piano gedragen begeleiding en de fluitsolo, daarna komt er een krachtig blazerachtig stukje, dat gecombineerd word met een sterk staaltje power.
​
Vreemde, maar zeker geen slechte eend in de bijt is op dit album het twaalfde nummer Into the Mountains, dat opent met een stukje fluit en windgeruis, dat ineens overslaat in een subtiel trance/dance-achtig ritme met een krachtige melodie en met strings- en brassgeluiden, waardoor het een dance-achtige solo wordt, wat me deed denken aan Tubular Bell 3 van Mike Oldfield. Kort daarna gaat het nummer over in een rustige tussenstukje fluitsolo, daarna wordt het ritmische gedeelte spannender en het geluidsbeeld voller.
​
De track When the story ends is een rustig piano Vangelis-achtige finale met een warme, mooie melodie, begeleid door fluit en electronische oohs. Als extraatje komt er als laatste de bonus track Strange beauty crying, dat begint met een simpel Tubular Bell achtig ritme en een fluitsolo met warme strings. Verder is de melodie niet bijzonder maar het is een heel sfeervolle afsluiter.
​
Voor de recht toe recht aan retro Berliner Schule liefhebbers is dit geen aanrader maar voor degene die wil en kan genieten van sfeervolle EM is dit echt een kans om iets bijzonders te horen, een aanrader!

Een eervolle vermelding verdient Eric voor de voortreffelijke mastering en editing van deze CD, want de geluidskwaliteit is meer dan pico bello en hij heeft ons kennis laten maken met een veelbelovend talent. Ik hoop dat Rogier een keer zijn mooie muziek kan laten horen tijdens een live concert (wellicht iets voor een Alfa Centauri evenement). Ik zorg dan dat ik op een goede plek zit in de zaal, want dit wil beslist niet missen.

Rogier A Van Gaal es el nombre completo de este teclista holandés que hizo su debut musical en Quantum Records con este trabajo, que recoge grabaciones a lo largo de 5 años (de 1998 a 2003). La música en este trabajo podría definirse como new-age o chill-out, pero siempre cercana a la electrónica, sin caer excesivamente en la complacencia armónica y sonora en la que quizás, cayó la new-age como género musical. La música se basa casi en su totalidad en melodías relajantes y espirituales, casi siempre con "pads" o sonidos de cuerdas sintetizadas que hacen un colchón de acordes sobre el cual desarrollar las ideas musicales. Sin embargo, como menciono, todos los temas tienen la característica de tener melodías bien definidas.
​
Vangelis, Gandalf, Kitaro, Tangerine Dream y Yanni son las influencias musicales que el propio Rogier dice tener. Por ejemplo, Closer To The Truth Part 2 me recuerda fuertemente al maestro griego Vangelis, con una melodía evocadora que mezcla los sonidos de cuerdas y ritmos épicos junto a toques pianísticos muy sutiles. Himalaya Mountains incluye melodías de flautas asiáticas y sonidos acústicos de cuerdas, provocando, una vez más, una relajación casi mística. Dream es un tema con una instrumentación más directa, una mezcla de sonido mediterráneo (quizás con tendencias musicales de Yanni). Siguiendo en la tónica, Closer To The Truth Part 4, es un tema lento, en este caso con un mayor protagonismo del sonido de piano, Associations tiene un cariz muy cercano al chill-out electrónico, probablemente te recuerde al trabajo Tres Lunas de Mike Oldfield. Questions o Into The Mountains están basados de nuevo el una melodía de flauta (muy presente en todo el trabajo) pero, mientras que el primero es lento y pausado en su totalidad, el segundo, tras una sutil introducción, se transforma en el tema más rítmico de todo el Cd, cambiando casi de forma radical la tónica general (pausada y espiritual) From The Shadow To The Sun, al utilizar una programación de ritmo dance, generando un tema rítmico y completamente bailable, con sonidos de electrónica centro-europea al principio y combinación de flauta y piano después.

En definitiva, este es un trabajo inspirado en la belleza de la naturaleza, reflexivo y que intenta provocar emociones interiores. Cuando quieras una tarde tranquila y utilizar la música como medio de interiorizar sentimientos, sin duda estre trabajo te ayudará.
